چکیده

The dense plasma phase of a dynamic z-pinch working at a high filling pressure is studied. By using the Schlieren-technique it is found that the compressed plasma column, though macroscopically stable for times less than 1 /us develops quickly from a homogeneous state to a turbulent one with a perturbation scale length of typically some millimeters. Quantitative measurements of light deflection give electron densities of typically 1019 cm 3 at 0.25 Torr He filling.

Assessment and application of quantitative schlieren methods: Calibrated color schlieren and background oriented schlieren

Two quantitative schlieren methods are assessed and compared: calibrated color schlieren (CCS) and background oriented schlieren (BOS). Both methods are capable of measuring the light deflection angle in two spatial directions, and hence the projected density gradient vector field. Spatial integration using the conjugate gradient method returns the projected density field. To assess the perform...

Axial x-ray backlighting of wire-array Z-pinches using X pinches.

For the first time, a geometry has been developed to allow for an axial imaging system for wire-array Z-pinch experiments that produce high-resolution x-ray images. The new geometry required a significant redesign of the electrode hardware. Calibrated areal density measurements of the Z-pinch plasma including wire cores, coronal plasma, streaming plasma, and the precursor were obtained. The sys...

Radiating shock measurements in the Z-pinch dynamic hohlraum.

The Z-pinch dynamic hohlraum is an x-ray source for high energy-density physics studies that is heated by a radiating shock to radiation temperatures >200 eV. The time-dependent 300-400 eV electron temperature and 15-35 mg/cc density of this shock have been measured for the first time using space-resolved Si tracer spectroscopy. The shock x-ray emission is inferred from these measurements to ex...

The Sheared Flow Stabilized Z-Pinch

The stabilizing effect of a sheared axial flow is investigated in the ZaP Flow Z-pinch experiment at the University of Washington. Long-lived, Z-pinch plasmas are generated that are 100 cm long with a 1 cm radius and exhibit gross stability for many Alfvén transit times. Experimental measurements show a sheared flow profile that is coincident with the quiescent period during which magnetic fluc...

Application of schlieren interferometry to temperature measurements during laser welding of high-density polyethylene films.

Schlieren interferometry is found to be an alternative tool for temperature measurement during thermoplastic laser welding with regard to methods based on thermocouples or optical pyrometers. In fact, these techniques are not easily applied when materials to be processed have reduced thickness, negligible heat conduction, and low emissivity, as is the case of welding high-density polyethylene f...
